{"id":1198,"date":"2014-10-19T18:28:12","date_gmt":"2014-10-19T16:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stephenbax.net\/?p=1198"},"modified":"2014-10-25T10:46:19","modified_gmt":"2014-10-25T09:46:19","slug":"a-15th-century-cipher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephenbax.net\/?p=1198","title":{"rendered":"A 15th century cipher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Looking back through some older Voynich research postings\u00c2\u00a0I was reminded of a <strong>fascinating \u00c2\u00a015th century Italian cipher<\/strong> which looks strikingly like the Voynich script <a class=\"eaffe\" href=\"https:\/\/pelin1971.hr\/%ec%98%81%ed%99%94-%ea%b4%91%eb%8c%80%eb%93%a4-%eb%8b%a4%ec%9a%b4%eb%a1%9c%eb%93%9c\/\">movie clowns<\/a>. It is the work of \u00c2\u00a0Giovanni (or Johannes) Fontana in Venice in around 1420-1430. Icon. 242 &#8220;Bellicorum instrumentorum Liber&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This cipher\u00c2\u00a0has long been known to Voynich enthusiasts, mostly through the work of Phil Neal, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voynich.net\/neal\/fontana.html\" target=\"_blank\">you can see his discussion here <a class=\"eaffe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thefrankanddeanshow.com\/%ec%a1%b4%eb%8d%94%eb%a6%ac%ed%8d%bc-%eb%8b%a4%ec%9a%b4%eb%a1%9c%eb%93%9c\/\">\uc874\ub354\ub9ac\ud37c \ub2e4\uc6b4\ub85c\ub4dc<\/a>.<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0The cipher was invented to encode Latin, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voynich.net\/neal\/omont.html\" target=\"_blank\">an article by Ormont<\/a> which Neal links to offers the key as follows:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stephenbax.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/battista_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1200 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/stephenbax.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/battista_3.jpg\" alt=\"battista_3\" width=\"860\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stephenbax.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/battista_3.jpg 860w, https:\/\/stephenbax.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/battista_3-300x44.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 860px) 100vw, 860px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The vowels are interesting &#8211; the &#8216;i&#8217; is a single circle, then the other vowels have lines off in different directions, left, up, down and right <a class=\"eaffe\" href=\"https:\/\/ruiz-capillas.com\/%eb%aa%a8%eb%85%b8%eb%93%9c%eb%9d%bc%eb%a7%88-mp3-%eb%8b%a4%ec%9a%b4%eb%a1%9c%eb%93%9c\/\">monodrama mp3<\/a>. The whole work can be found on the website of the Munich library &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/daten.digitale-sammlungen.de\/~db\/0001\/bsb00013084\/image_7\" target=\"_blank\">see the first page here <a class=\"eaffe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.venuesfor21stbirthdayparty.com\/2020\/02\/05\/%ec%a0%9c%ec%a4%91%ec%9b%90-%eb%8b%a4%ec%9a%b4%eb%a1%9c%eb%93%9c\/\">\uc81c\uc911\uc6d0 \ub2e4\uc6b4\ub85c\ub4dc<\/a>.<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0In fact an early page of the manuscript <a href=\"http:\/\/daten.digitale-sammlungen.de\/~db\/0001\/bsb00013084\/image_6\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0offers the alphabet sequence <a class=\"eaffe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.belting.co.za\/%ec%96%b4%eb%a5%b8%ec%9d%b4-%eb%90%98%eb%a9%b4-%eb%8b%a4%ec%9a%b4%eb%a1%9c%eb%93%9c\/\">Download as an adult<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The work in the Munich library is mainly about machines of warfare such as this one:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stephenbax.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/battista_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1201 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/stephenbax.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/battista_1.jpg\" alt=\"battista_1\" width=\"448\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stephenbax.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/battista_1.jpg 448w, https:\/\/stephenbax.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/battista_1-300x145.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I mention it again now only\u00c2\u00a0to bring it to wider attention, for people who do not know it, but it is nonetheless interesting in the context of my own work on the manuscript <a class=\"eaffe\" href=\"http:\/\/salos.pl\/2020\/02\/tv%ed%8c%9f-%eb%8b%a4%ec%9a%b4%eb%a1%9c%eb%93%9c\/\">tv\ud31f \ub2e4\uc6b4\ub85c\ub4dc<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One curiosity is that although the text uses the cipher, it\u00c2\u00a0also uses Latin alongside, which would rather seem to destroy any attempt at secrecy <a class=\"eaffe\" href=\"http:\/\/narrativealliance.com\/%ec%b9%b4%ed%88%b0-%ec%9b%8c%ec%a6%88-2-%eb%b2%84%ea%b7%b8-%ed%8c%90-apk-%eb%8b%a4%ec%9a%b4%eb%a1%9c%eb%93%9c\/\">Cartoon Wars 2 bug edition apk download<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Also, another point worth noting is that the cipher is extremely regular in its design, as we can see from the patterning of the vowels mentioned above <a class=\"eaffe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rivieraspineta.com\/11416\/%ed%8c%8c%ed%8c%9014-%eb%af%b8%ed%84%b0%ea%b8%b0-%eb%8b%a4%ec%9a%b4%eb%a1%9c%eb%93%9c\/\">\ud30c\ud31014 \ubbf8\ud130\uae30 \ub2e4\uc6b4\ub85c\ub4dc<\/a>. This regularity is not the case with the Voynich script.<\/p>\n<p>This might then suggest that the Voynich script is\u00c2\u00a0not likely to be a <em><strong>cipher<\/strong> <\/em>developed by a single person (in which case it would probably have regularities like Fontana&#8217;s), but a <em><strong>script<\/strong> <\/em>developed rather as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glagolitic_alphabet\" target=\"_blank\">the Glagolithic script<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0was, perhaps by a number of people, perhaps derived from other scripts and intended for communication instead of obscurity <a class=\"eaffe\" href=\"http:\/\/prbfeed.com\/niv-%ec%84%b1%ea%b2%bd-mp3-%eb%8b%a4%ec%9a%b4%eb%a1%9c%eb%93%9c\/\">niv \uc131\uacbd mp3 \ub2e4\uc6b4\ub85c\ub4dc<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the case, it is an interesting example&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Looking back through some older Voynich research postings\u00c2\u00a0I was reminded of a fascinating \u00c2\u00a015th century Italian cipher which looks strikingly like the Voynich script movie clowns.
